Welcome to the tropics. If severe weather is forecast, our team will provide clear guidance and updates.
It is difficult to predict what these storms are going to do, so our team will keep up to date and provide information and advice.
Some sea creatures in North Queensland waters can be very dangerous, including marine stingers. Stinger season is at its highest from November to March.
Bluebottles and other jellyfish (non-tropical stingers)
Non-tropical stingers live in waters all around Australia’s coastline. Bluebottle stings are the most common jellyfish stings in Australia.
Symptoms are: intense pain straight away, redness at the site
To treat a sting:
Get help from a lifesaver or lifeguard if possible.
Wash any tentacles off the skin with seawater, not fresh water.
Soak the affected area in hot water (no hotter than can be easily tolerated) for 20 minutes to relieve the pain.
See a doctor if the pain or symptoms gets worse.
Tropical Marine Stingers
Tropical stingers (jellyfish) live in tropical waters along the coastline of Northern Australia. The most dangerous are the box jellyfish and Irukandji.Signs to watch for
Symptoms are:
Box jellyfish: severe pain, seizures, trouble breathing, cardiac arrest
Irukandji: severe back or muscle pain, headache, chest or abdominal pain, nausea, sweating, anxiety, restlessness, or trouble breathing
If stung:
Call triple zero (000) and ask for an ambulance.
Get help from a lifeguard if possible.
If unconscious, start CPR.
Pour or spray vinegar onto the sting for at least 30 seconds.
If vinegar isn’t available, carefully remove tentacles and rinse with seawater – never use fresh water, alcohol, or methylated spirits.
If someone is in serious trouble – having trouble breathing, unconscious, or experiencing cardiac arrest – call triple zero (000) immediately and ask for an ambulance.
Stay safe, and enjoy the tropical waters responsibly.
